Agruably a milestone for dance choreography in a music
video during the 90s, "If", directed by Domenic Sena presented
a futuristic version of sensual indulgence. This of course aided by sultry
choreography that was far from the realm of millitancy as seen in Janet's
previous album at the time, Rhythm Nation 1814. To critics, this video
solidified Janet's coming of age, executing an onslaught of vivacious
and sensual moves carefully walking a teasing line in bordering sexual.
Perhaps where Janet grabs the crotch of her dance partner, Omar Lopez
was one of the many reasons she shyed away from her mother's invitation
to the video shoot and thus persuaded her not to attend. Originally, the
record company released three versions of the video with one showing more
of the dance choreography. Often imitated (as seen in Salt N Peppa's "Whatta
Man" video), but never duplicated, the choreography featured in "If",
would set the trend for the rest of the 90s and into the new millenium
as we know it.
